The honest answer is that school readiness is not a single skill. It’s a constellation of abilities — cognitive, physical, social, and emotional — that together create the foundation a child needs to thrive in a formal school setting. The good news is that most of these can be nurtured and developed, and many children who seem “not quite ready” simply need a little more time and intentional support.

Here is a comprehensive checklist to help you assess where your child is — and where they might need a little extra attention before Grade R begins.

This checklist is a guide, not a test. No child needs to tick every single box to be ready for Grade R. SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL READINESS

Children spend their school days navigating relationships, handling emotions, and managing their own behaviour. These social and emotional foundations matter as much as academic ones:

  • Can separate from a parent or caregiver without significant distress
  • Can play cooperatively with other children — sharing, taking turns, and negotiating
  • Can manage basic frustration without having a full meltdown (some frustration is completely normal)
  • Can follow simple classroom rules when reminded
  • Can express needs and feelings using words, most of the time
  • Shows empathy — notices and responds to how others are feeling
  • Can sit and listen as part of a group for short periods (10–15 minutes)
  • Can transition between activities without extreme difficulty
COGNITIVE READINESS

Cognitive readiness is about thinking, reasoning, and early academic skills. These don’t need to be perfectly developed — Grade R is where formal learning begins — but a foundation helps:

  • Recognises and names at least some letters of the alphabet
  • Can count objects to at least 10 with one-to-one correspondence (touching each object as they count)
  • Understands basic concepts: big/small, top/bottom, before/after, same/different
  • Can recall a simple story or sequence of events
